I bought this model to upgrade my 2 year old Toshiba A215-S7437 which has served me well being used nearly everyday for 2 years as my primary work computer. It's still running strong but my wife decided she wanted it, so I get a new laptop - not a bad deal! The A505-S6973 is a worthy, superior upgrade. I am impressed with the value of this laptop, paying $650 for a nice Core 2 Duo processor, generous 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, HDMI output, and plenty of other bells & whistles.
The 16" screen maintains a nice balance of generous size & decent portability, though folks looking for something light and svelte would probably want to pursue something smaller. My wife bought a netbook a year ago for work, but hardly ever used it and hence decided to adopt my old 15.4" Toshiba mentioned above. She missed having a cd/dvd drive and found the netbook too small for her liking - so make sure you know what you want before buying a laptop! Anyway, the screen on this one is bright and beautiful. The speakers are great for a laptop, handling decent volume without distorting. The fit and finish of the computer are great, with a subtle & elegant striped design on the case that's barely noticeable but adds a bit to the aesthetics. The keyboard area has a classy all-black style and has a numeric keypad, something I haven't had on a laptop before and really appreciate.
From a productivity standpoint, the computer is fast and efficient. My old laptop had an AMD Turion dual core processor which was fine, but the Core 2 Duo is speedier still. The computer runs Vista 64bit with no problems. Buyers also get a free Windows 7 upgrade (check Toshiba's website for details) though will pay $11 to have it shipped - not a bad deal. You get a trial of Office 2007 & Norton software and a full version of Microsoft Works. That means most folks will need a longer term solution for an Office Suite and security programs. Still, at this price point one can't complain about value.
Here's the bottom line on this laptop compared to similar priced competition: Good processor, a big 500GB hard drive, 4 USB ports (many in this price range offer only 2), HDMI output, 4GB RAM, attractive styling. Shop around & you'll likely find that, at least at the moment, this is an unbeatable value. Highly recommended!
